My name is Paola Andrea Echave and I’m a Senior Research Associate at the Urban Institute
My experience as an immigrant from Bolivia living in the US, the fundamental knowledge I gained through the completion of a PhD in Sociology and working with community based organizations have shaped my research interests and provided me with the foundation to develop meaningful research with a policy focus. I am actively involved in matters that impact my community by volunteering or even providing consultation services. Currently, I am a Senior Research Associate in the Tax and Income Supports Division at the Urban Institute. My research focuses on immigration, population health, demography, life course perspectives, health disparities, trauma, and race/ethnicity. I have extensive training in quantitative and qualitative methods, data collection and survey design in multiple languages, and experience with development and analyses of large-scale social science and demographic surveys. I have served as a technical expert for various demographic and international projects in Central America and Sub-Saharan Africa. My research has been published in peer reviewed journals and has been featured in many media outlets including ScienceDaily, Ohio State News, Fox 8 News, Chicago Tribune, and international outlets, such as UK Times.
I use various data sources, including the U.S. Census, to study the impact of immigration enforcement on the well-being of immigrant and Latinx communities in the U.S. I also conduct research that uses mixed-methods to analyze the influence that immigration policy has on the lives of immigrants and other underepresented communities. I am currently the lead analyst and project manager of the Annual Survey of Refugees, which has given the opportunity to work with colleagues on survey design and data collection.
I led and co-led multiple international projects in countres across Latin American and parts of Africa. I continue to pursue this passion at the Urban Institute, where I work with academic colleagues, community-based organizations, and researchers to develop intervention programs that reduce the risk of labor exploitation in places like Mexico and Bolivia.
Throughout my career, I worked and maintained effective relationships and communications with community-based organizations, project sponsors and external stakeholders, including undergraduate students, academics, the Latinx Space for Enrichment and Research, the Institute for Population Research at the Ohio State University, and immigrant-serving organizations in the US and Mexico. I continue to strenghten these relationships by collaborating or leading team projects and providing guidance on how to complete a demographic or international study.
My specialized experience consists of reviewing and analyzing data from censuses and large-scale social science and demographic surveys. I also serve as a technical expert for various demographic and international projects and developed research programs that are carried out by others under my guidance.
In order to promote the academic developemt of other students and professionals, I create R and Stata tutorials and statistical analyses workshops in Spanish/English and present this information to students, researchers, and organizations.
